Most business training software gets built for offices, not worksites. It's designed for someone sitting at a desk with reliable Wi-Fi, clicking through a course between meetings. That approach falls apart the moment you try to use it underground, on a drilling rig, or on a plant floor where the nearest signal bar is a mile away. If you're buying training software for a high-risk industrial site, the evaluation criteria that matter aren't the ones in most buyer's guides.

Start With Your Regulatory Obligations, Not Vendor Feature Lists

Before you look at a single demo, map out exactly what you're required to train on and document. In mining, that means MSHA Part 48 hours for surface and underground miners. In construction and manufacturing, it's a bunch of OSHA standards that cover things like what chemicals you have on-site, locking and tagging out equipment before maintenance, and how to enter confined spaces. These aren't nice-to-haves you bolt on later. They're the baseline.

Write down every mandated training requirement your site has, along with how often retraining is required, and what documentation you need to produce if an inspector shows up. Then treat that list as a non-negotiable checklist. Any platform that can't handle it isn't a candidate, no matter how good the interface looks in a sales call.

This matters more than it sounds. Vendors love to lead with dashboards, gamification, and social learning features that look impressive in a demo but do nothing for a safety manager trying to prove compliance. Skip past that. Ask directly: "Can this system track MSHA Part 48 hours per miner and generate an export I can hand to an inspector in five minutes?" If the answer is vague, move on.

Offline Functionality Isn't Optional, It's The Whole Point

This is where off-the-shelf corporate LMS products struggle the most. They are designed with the assumption that there will always be a reliable internet connection available. But the reality of many industrial settings is that connectivity is limited, unreliable, or even non-existent. Underground mines, remote drilling sites, and rural locations may have poor connectivity.

If your learning management system can't deliver or capture training data without a constant live connection, then you've chosen the wrong solution. Workers must be able to access training modules, take and submit assessments, and have supervisors sign off on completion while working offline. All that data must then sync to the LMS once a connection becomes available.

This may sound like a minor technicality but it can have major implications. It can mean the difference between having a complete digital trail of training records for every employee in case of an audit, or having huge gaps in your records because a lost signal prevented a tablet from syncing with the central database.

When you are in the vendor selection process, get them to specifically demonstrate how the offline experience works. Don't just ask, "Can you run offline?" Actually, have one of your team members test the solution offline in a real-world scenario: disable the network connection, complete a module, reconnect and see if the completion was seamlessly uploaded.

Demand Competency Verification, Not Just Completion Tracking

An employee completing a video isn't synonymous with an employee being adept at performing a task. Unfortunately, most corporate LMS platforms view this as identical, and "completed" as the endpoint in training. In a high-risk work environment, this is insufficient.

You should seek platforms that support competency management, i.e. skills evaluations, supervisor assessments, and real-world sign-offs that assure the readiness of an employee to perform a task. If you want a starting point for how this plays out in a specific sector, some of the best mining LMS platforms already build their evaluation criteria around MSHA compliance and field usability rather than general corporate training features. This is particularly critical regarding equipment operation, confined space entries, and other high-risk tasks where even small knowledge deficiencies can significantly increase the risk of an accident.

This is the business argument for a competency, results-oriented approach, as opposed to an "I attended a seminar" checkbox. Build An Evaluation Checklist You Can Actually Score Against

Once you have set your regulatory requirements, offline capability, and competency verification needs, what comes next? How do you compare vendor proposals in an objective way that doesn't rely on faith, promises, or feelings? The natural tendency is to assemble a list of "nice to haves" and then go with your gut based on what you can check off versus where you get a bad feeling about how a vendor answered "we're working on that."

Don't let gut feelings be how you pick the software in a category where missing features can mean serious injuries or worse. Instead, stick your vendor requirements in a grid. Down the side, list the main areas where you need an LMS to differ from generic corporate training platforms to support your operational reality. Across the top, put the vendor's name. Then add checkmarks for each of the following in the rows:

●   Does the LMS map to your regulatory requirements out of the box, therefore providing pass/fail support for mines and plants based in different countries?

●   Can this LMS work for a task list the user downloads once a month as effectively as a safety training course the user takes once a year?

●   When the system is offline, which elements are available: training records, the full assessment engine, authoring and editing changes, viewing and printing certificates?

●   Are all functions supportable on an iPad Pro as well as a desktop computer?

Audit Trails Need To Survive A Surprise Inspection

Regulators often arrive without warning. So, when MSHA or OSHA comes knocking, you need to know immediately who's trained, when that training expires, and who's currently out of compliance. If those details aren't readily available, and you have to call your IT department, wait 48 hours or more, and hope for the best, you've already got a problem.

The right LMS not only ensures you'll have real-time access to that information, but can also instantly produce exportable, audit-ready reports. It will also automatically maintain a perfect, tamper-proof record of who was trained, when, on what specifics, and who signed off. Given the right records can make an audit go faster and cost less, this is a big deal.

When a piece of equipment fails or an incident occurs, likely one of the first things a litigator will ask for is your training history. Here again, having complete records that were obviously not pieced together post hoc can mean the difference between a quick review and a much longer, more expensive one.

Test The Software On The Hardware Your Workers Actually Use

A system that appears appealing on a laptop during a sales presentation may not be functional on the ruggedized tablet your team brings into a dusty, moist, or cold location. Screen reflection, gloves, older processors on devices, and a weak signal can all render training software unworkable.

Pressure suppliers to present a demo of their solution on the actual devices that your employees will be using, rather than just a shiny laptop in the meeting room. Be aware of load times, real touch performance, and whether the solution is simple enough for employees with different levels of computer literacy. A bad user interface will not just make people angry but will make part of your training incompletable, and that will resurface in the form of non-compliance issues later.

Certification Tracking Should Prevent Problems, Not Just Log Them

Automatic expiration alerts may seem easy, but how well they are implemented can differ from one provider to the next. You'll want a solution that raises the alarm on impending certificate expirations long before the actual event, initiates retraining processes automatically, and even prevents or warns a worker about to start work if their necessary document has expired.

This is the feature that helps to prevent incidents in the first place, rather than simply recording and reporting them after the fact. A confined space entry cert that expired last month shouldn't be uncovered in an incident postmortem; it should have alerted a supervisor a week or two earlier.

Check Content Compatibility Before You Commit

In case you've already sunk costs into training content, make sure to ask if the platform is SCORM or xAPI compliant - if it is, you can easily import your current material rather than having to start from the ground up. Rebuilding a full library of safety courses is a cumbersome, expensive process, and it's a waste of time and money if your content is fine and just needs to be located elsewhere.

Additionally, check if the platform has built-in authoring tools for training content. Some solutions allow you to create and modify courses in the system itself. This will be important for you if content for your safety training frequently changes based on new equipment or site-specific hazards.

Integration, Data Ownership, And Support Round Out The Picture

Ensure that the training platform you choose is able to communicate with your HR system, ERP, incident-management software etc., so that the data doesn't have to be entered twice and you don't end up with blind spots in your safety stats. Try to be more precise about how the integration works instead of only asking, "Do you have an API?"

Also, find out who owns the data and where it's hosted. This is not just about security and privacy concerns. You should also consider what happens with your data if you were to decide to switch vendors down the line. Cloud vendors are not all the same in this area, especially if you're in a country with specific data residency constraints or you can't always rely on the connectivity.

The other thing you want to look at is the vendor support. Go for a vendor that can give you 99.9% uptime guarantees, and tell you what their average support ticket turnaround time is for remote sites. They won't hold back from giving you the names of their unhappy customers in the mining or manufacturing sectors, if that's what you need to hear. You'll also want to know whether they offer 24/7 helpdesk support in the languages you need.

Buy For The Worksite, Not The Sales Demo

Platforms in high-risk environments that fail almost always do so for the same reason: they were assessed as if they were run-of-the-mill corporate business training software, not safety-critical infrastructure. First, map your regulatory requirements, second, test offline functionality in the field, and third, demand competency verification - not just completion tracking. After that, everything else is secondary. Get those three right, and the rest of the evaluation gets a lot easier.
