When Did We Start Talking To Technology?

For years, we have turned to technology whenever we wanted to communicate with someone else. We typed on keyboards, tapped screens, sent emails, posted messages, joined video calls and moved information from one person to another through increasingly sophisticated machines. Technology sat between people, carrying our words at remarkable speed while remaining, fundamentally, a tool. Then something has shifted, and now, we increasingly talk to technology itself.

We ask Siri for directions, tell Alexa to turn on the lights, speak to ChatGPT about a difficult decision, dictate messages to our phones, ask search engines questions in complete sentences and give software instructions in ordinary language. The interface is becoming conversational, which changes something rather important: communication is no longer simply about expressing ourselves clearly enough for another human being to understand us. Increasingly, we are learning how to express ourselves to systems that interpret, predict, respond and act; and that shift brings an intriguing opportunity because it gives communication a new job.

Our everyday language is becoming an interface

When people talk to another person, they automatically supply context. A friend understands the history behind a question, notices hesitation, recognises humour and knows when a sentence means something slightly different from its literal wording. Technology has traditionally required the opposite approach. We learned commands, menus, buttons, search terms and specific syntax because machines needed instructions in formats they recognised. Conversational technology is changing that relationship, and suddenly ordinary language itself becomes a form of interface design. This makes one practical skill increasingly valuable, which is knowing what you actually want before you ask for it. In other words, a vague request produces a vague result, but a well-framed request gives an intelligent system something useful to work with. That means people benefit from becoming better at explaining objectives, supplying relevant context, identifying constraints and refining an answer through follow-up questions.

The best technology starts with human behaviour

This also creates a fascinating responsibility for the people building technology. As interfaces become more conversational, developers have greater freedom to make products behave according to human expectations, which puts usability, clarity and emotional intelligence much closer to the centre of product design. Tech founder Zibo Gao offers a useful example through his consumer-app work, where simplicity and the user's experience sit at the heart of the product philosophy. Gao has spoken about repeatedly going through products to make them simpler and easier to digest, while his portfolio spans social, music and consumer apps designed around familiar human behaviours. That approach matters here a great deal because people rarely wake up wanting to understand a technology stack. They want to accomplish something. They want to find the song, send the message, solve the problem, make the decision, organise the day or connect with someone they care about. The technology earns its place when it reduces friction between the person and that goal. As conversational interfaces become more common, this principle becomes even more important. If the technology is talking back, asking questions and making suggestions, its personality, clarity and responsiveness become part of the product itself.

Communication skills are gaining a new dimension

There is also a useful irony here. We have spent decades worrying that technology would make people communicate less effectively, yet conversational technology gives us another environment in which communication skills matter enormously. The practical lesson is that you get to say what outcome you want, give enough context to establish the situation, explain the constraints that matter and respond to the first answer with useful feedback. That is effective prompting, but it is also effective communication. The same habit works in a meeting. It works when explaining a problem to a colleague. It works when giving instructions, writing a brief or asking someone for help. Clear thinking produces clearer language, and clearer language gives both people and machines a better chance of producing the right outcome. Technology therefore becomes something of a communication gym. Every interaction gives us another opportunity to practise precision, context, questioning and iteration.

The next interface could be the conversation itself

For technology companies, this shift opens an enormous design space.We are moving towards systems that respond to natural language, voice, gestures, images and combinations of all three, which means the old assumption that every digital experience requires a screen full of buttons starts to weaken. That does not make visual design irrelevant. It makes good design broader. The strongest products will increasingly understand when someone wants to speak, when they want to tap, when they need a visual explanation and when they simply want the technology to take care of something. The winning question for emerging technology therefore becomes wonderfully human: What is the easiest way for this person to get where they want to go? That question leads to better interfaces, better products and better experiences, because once technology understands the human goal, every layer underneath it has a clearer purpose.

And that is perhaps the biggest change of all. We began by using technology to carry our communication, then learned to communicate through technology, and now we are teaching ourselves to communicate directly with technology. As that relationship develops, our ability to express intent becomes more valuable, designers become more responsible for making technology understandable, interfaces become increasingly conversational, and technology itself moves closer to becoming an everyday collaborator rather than something we simply operate.
